It’s that time of year when you start to hear a lot about setting goals. I guess that the changing from one year to the next is as good a time as any to think about goals and it’s the time of year most people think about them but it gets kind of old, don’t you think?
But here’s the thing. The beginning of the year is a fresh start. The year is new and everything that goes with it can be new too.
Everybody likes a fresh start.
I’ve been guilty on the past of setting goals, or resolutions, at the start of a new year and then not following through. You get me, right?
What is the problem with making a New Year’s resolution or goal? There’s no problem with making the goal, the problem is we don’t follow through and reach them. Why is that?
Blocking the Goal
What keeps us from reaching our goals?
I know the answer, at least for me, (and probably for you too).
I don’t take action.
Boom! The answer in a nutshell.
A goal without action is just a wish. Let me say that again. A goal without action is just a wish.
You have to take action!
I think that’s why so many people make New Year’s resolutions. Wishes are easy. If it’s just a wish, big deal. Nobody gets their wishes, Right?
Just blow out the candles and get on with your life.
But there’s one tweak that you can make that will change everything. Don’t just make the goal or resolution. Do one thing to start the momentum toward that goal. Why? Because it’s hard to stop momentum.
If you’re not willing to take action then maybe now is not the time for that particular goal and you. Or maybe it is just a wish. Or maybe there’s an internal negative story you keep telling yourself about why you’ll never be able to reach the goal anyway, so why try?
Stories In My Head
The only thing stopping us from doing what we desire is the stories we keep telling ourselves.
“I’m not smart enough”
“It takes money to make money”
“I don’t have the advantages so and so has..”
“I don’t have the time to give the extra effort”
We have to quit telling ourselves these stories. They’re only true because we believe them and often we believe them because it gives us an excuse or a way to rationalize our current situation.
Having a Breakthrough
You might have had a good year in 2016 or you might have had a bad year. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have control over how 2017 turns out!
Make a decision now to take action this next year. Don’t make a goal or a resolution without doing at least one thing that day to help you reach that goal.
It’s time to take a stand. Are you going to keep wishing or start acheiving?
